GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball 13-game win streak came to end on Friday with a 3-2 loss to (RV) Trinity Christian (Ill.) College before rebounding with an impressive 3-1 win over 18th-ranked Rocky Mountain (Mont.) College to close the day 1-1 at the Cornerstone Classic.
Lawrence Tech (17-2, 10-0) closed the Cornerstone Classic with resounding win over a top 20 program in Rocky Mountain. The Blue Devils responded from their second loss of the season with a four set win led by Zakia Hunt with a career high 27 kills while finishing with a .453 hitting percentage. Kristi Doherty finished the match with 57 assists, 21 digs, and five kills. Jessica Lodge added 14 kills while Madeline Hudson added 11 kills for a .321 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils played much better offensively, hitting .215 compared to the first match of .098. They finished with 69 kills and 22 errors with six aces. They held Rocky Mountain to a .176 hitting percentage on 52 kills and 19 errors.
Lawrence Techhad their 13-game win streak snapped in the opening match of the day. The Blue Devils dropped the opening set of the match to the Trolls of Trinity Christian 25-20, but came roaring back to take the next two sets 25-20 and 25-22 to go up 2-1. The Trolls didn't roll over, taking the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth set. The Blue Devils entered the day 2-1 in five set matches this season, but Trinity spoiled their third five set win of the season with a 15-11 win to take the match 3-2.
The Blue Devils struggled offensively as they finished the match with 36 errors and a season low .098 hitting percentage while Trinity Christian finished with a .216 hitting percentage on 59 kills. Gromakova led the way for Lawrence Tech with 18 kills and a .244 hitting percentage while Doherty recorded 42 assists, 21 digs, two aces, and a pair of kills. Lodge added 14 kills while Hunt finished with 11 kills.
Lawrence Tech is back on the court Saturday, October 12 when they start day two of the Cornerstone Classic with Indiana University – South Bend at 1 p.m. followed by Bethel (Ind.) University at 3 p.m.
