ADRIAN, Mich. – The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team moved to 10-0 in the WHAC as they swept Siena Heights (Mich.) University 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20) on Wednesday night in Adrian, Mich. The win also moves the Blue Devils win streak to 13 as they are now 16-1 on the season.
Lawrence Tech (16-1, 10-0) has now gone undefeated in the first half of conference play as they struggled on the floor with a .172 hitting percentage and 22 errors. Zakia Hunt led the way with 11 kills and a .227 hitting percentage while Jessica Lodge and Brittany Taber finished with 10 kills each. Reigning WHAC Setter of the Week Kristi Doherty finished the match with 34 assists, five kills, and three service aces to go with 17 digs. The Blue Devils held Siena Heights to a .123 hitting percentage as they committed 13 errors on 138 attacks.
Lawrence Tech trailed early on in the match as Siena Heights opened up a 5-3 lead as they held on until the Blue Devils tied it at 7-7. The match would have seven more ties as the teams went point-for-point until Lawrence Tech went on a 5-0 run at 17-17 to take a 22-17 lead off the serve of Lodge. Madeline Hudson had a pair of kills during the run while Doherty also added one kill. The first set would end on a service error from Siena Heights as LTU won it 25-21.
Siena Heights (4-12, 2-8) took an early 6-2 lead on the Blue Devils in the second set, but Lawrence Tech and Mackenzie Fisher went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-6 lead off an ace from Fisher. The Blue Devils pushed the lead to 15-9 and then 21-15 as they took control of the set off a pair of errors from the Saints. Lodge would close the set out with a pair of kills to give LTU the 25-17 set win to go up 2-0 in the match.
In the final set of the match, the team continued to battle for points, but it was Doherty's service game that pushed the Blue Devils into a 9-4 lead as she had three aces during that run. The Saints tied the set at 14-14 and again at 18-18, but Lawrence Tech took the set 25-20 off a Hunt kill to seal the match 3-0.
The Blue Devils finish the first half of conference play 10-0, dropping just five sets over 10 matches. This is the first time in program history the Blue Devils have gone unbeaten in the first half of conference play.
Lawrence Tech now takes a weekend off of WHAC play as they head to the Cornerstone Tournament in Grand Rapids, Mich. to face four non-conference opponents at Mol Arena. The Blue Devils open the weekend on Friday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. against Trinity followed by Rocky Mountain at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 12 the Blue Devils face Indiana – South Bend at 1 p.m. followed by Bethel (Ind.) 3 p.m.
