SOUTHFIELD, Mich.- The Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) women's tennis team battled until the end in their first home match of the season but lost against Michigan Technological University (Mich.). This match was played at the Birmingham Groves High School tennis courts in Southfield, Mich. with a final score of 0-9, which gives the Huskies a lead of 3-0 in the all-time series.
The Blue Devils put up a fight in all doubles flights but lost the three of them. Doubles pair Samantha Kohn (SO/Dearborn, Mich.) and Samantha Weber (FR/Clarkston, Mich.) lost 3-8 against Vicky Quinde and Samantha Johnson at court-three doubles. Doubles pair Sabrina Mateos (JR/Mexico City, Mex.) and Anusha Varudandi (SO/Parkland, Fla.) fell 4-8 against Ivona Gorgioski and Jessica Brown at court-one doubles. The last pair to finish their match, Maria Alvarez (Ames, La Coruña, Spain) and Maria Vega-Hazas (FR/Santander, Spain), lost 6-8 against Allenca Rolim and Anabella Neri at court-three doubles.
The same happened in all singles flights. Mateos lost her match against Brown at court-two singles with a score of 1-6 in both sets. At court-one singles, Varudandi lost both sets against Gorgioski with a score of 3-6 and 0-6. Kohn fell against Quinde at court-four singles with a score of 3-6 and 4-6. By this time, the Huskies had won the match since they already had five out of nine points. Courts-three and six singles were able to finish their second set, and court-five singles' second set was a game of 10 points. At court-three, Vega-Hazas lost 5-7 and 4-6 against Johnson. At court-six, Alvarez lost 5-7 and 2-6 against Mirna Golac. At court-five singles, the match was played to three sets. Weber put up a fight on the first set of court-five singles but lost with a score of 5-7. However, she won the second set with a score of 7-5 to tie the match. In the third set, which was a tie-breaker played to 10 points, Weber lost against Neri with a score of 5-10.
The Blue Devils will return to the courts on September 12 when they face Adrian College (Mich.) in Adrian, Mich. at 4 p.m.
