ADRIAN, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University women's basketball team battled all four quarters in the attempt to up end the 17-1 Saints of Siena Heights University (Mich.), but could not topple the team who had an outstanding fourth quarter to secure the win and give the loss the the Blue Devils who fell 87-76 on the road.
Having four Blue Devils (6-3, 12-7) with double digit points, LTU stayed with the Saints (9-0, 17-1) for the majority of the game, including keeping their consistent mid game comebacks alive with a strong second and third quarter. Leading the team statistically was Kendall Fisher, who had 20 points in the match, but right behind her was a Teryn Kline with 19 points. Both Kaitlyn Smith and Danielle Hanson had 14 points in the conclusion of the game versus the undefeated WHAC opponent. While the Blue devils did battle, the Saints just narrowly ousted them in every stat category, despite free throws where LTU grabbed a 91% and the Saints only hit 80%. Kline, from the foul line, hit eight free throws for 100% from the line, and right with her was the five for five effort from Smith.
The first quarter saw each team's shots not falling. Going into the second, SHU was up 21-16, but the ladies upended that score and went ahead and took the second with shooting 50% from inside and limiting the Saints to low 30% shooting average. The Ladies gained the lead late in the second, up 38-32 with a jump shot from Hope Dollarhide, but then the Saints came back with ferocity to score six points and tie the game to close the first half of the game.
Entering the second half of the game, Fisher opened the third with a quick three point shot to set the tone. grabbing another lead through free throws and a smooth three point from the hands of Kline, the Blue Devils were up again 46-41. But the Saints dug down and climbed back up to tie the game through free throws with seven minutes to go. After sinking three free throws, Kaitlyn Smith took the score back up, but back to back lay-ups from the Saints brought them their first lead of the third. Free throws made the game seem close, with LTU continuing to bring the score back to back between leads. But, they persisted and with another series a free throws, Kline hit four from two separate fouls to gain the lead back going into the fourth.
The fourth started, and them Saints kicked it into gear. They grabbed the lead with only a minute and a half off the clock and never looked back, stunning LTU by grabbing 29 points and limiting the Blue Devil offense to 15 points and the defense to six rebounds.
Up next, the Blue Devils come home to face another WHAC opponent in the form of the Gray Wolves of Lourdes University (Ohio.) on Wednesday, January 15th. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m..
