SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's volleyball team opened the season at the Michigan Men's Volleyball Invitational at Adrian (Mich.) College in Adrian, Mich. on Friday, January 11. They Blue Devils opened the weekend with Adrian and fell to the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23). In the final match of the day, Lawrence Tech dropped their match to Siena Heights (Mich.) University 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-11).
Lawrence Tech (0-1) vs. Adrian – 3-0 // 25-21, 25-20, 25-23
The Blue Devils held their own in the first set, going back-and-forth with the Bulldogs with 10 early ties, but a mini 3-0 run pushed Adrian to a 13-10 lead. Lawrence Tech responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 17-13 lead as Joshua Eckert served the Blue Devils into the lead as LTU had three blocks during that run. Adrian tied the match at 17-17 and it continued point-for-point for the next four points until the Bulldogs took a 21-19 lead. They closed the set with four straight points to take a 1-0 lead on Lawrence Tech in the match.
In set two, the Blue Devils and Bulldogs battled early in the set, but the Bulldogs pulled away after tying the match at 10-10. Adrian rattled off eight of the next 10 points to take an 18-12 lead on the Blue Devils. Lawrence Tech attempted to cut the lead, getting as closes as 20-16, but the Bulldogs closed the set out with an LTU error to take a 2-0 lead on the Blue Devils.
Adrian jumped out to a 13-9 lead before the Blue Devils started to claw their way back into the set with a few kills by Calvin Ooms and Gospel Sua to tie it at 18-18. Adrian retook the lead on the next point and built it to 24-20 before Lawrence Tech made it a one-point game at 24-23 following a Bulldog attacking error. A Blue Devil service error ended the set and the match as Adrian pulled off the 25-23 set win to take the match 3-0.
Inside the Numbers
Sua finished the match with 21 assists while Stefan Sretenovic had four kills, 10 digs, and a service ace. Ooms and Lawrence Patton led the way on the offensive side with seven kills apiece while Patton added three block assists.
Adrian was led by Noah Marcinkowski with eight kills and a pair of aces while Joseph Campana finished with 25 assists, three kills, six digs, a solo block, and two block assists. Tedrick Gula added five kills off the bench for the Bulldogs.
Lawrence Tech (0-2) vs. Siena Heights – 3-1 // 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-11
The Blue Devils won their first set of the season to open the match with Siena Heights, taking it 25-23 after opening up a 6-1 lead on the Saints. The Saints battled back to tie the set at 11-11 and traded points for the next few serves with Lawrence Tech taking a 20-18 lead on a kill from Eckert. The Saints fought back to tie the match at 23-23, but Joseph Balanda kill sealed the set win 25-23 to take a 1-0 lead on Siena Heights.
The Saints cruised through the next three sets as the Blue Devils struggled from the floor as they had 22 errors over the final three sets. In set two, the Saints took a 16-9 lead on the Blue Devils and closed the set out 25-16. Lawrence Tech opened the second set with the Saints tied at 4-4, but Siena Heights was able to shake off the Blue Devils to take the set win.
In the third set, Lawrence Tech and Siena Heights were tied at 4-4, again when the Saints went on a 13-5 run to take a 17-9 lead as they headed to a 25-16 set win and a 2-1 lead. It was all Siena Heights in the fourth set as they jumped out to a 14-1 lead as they closed the match out with a 25-11 set win.
Inside the Numbers
Eckert led the way for Lawrence Tech with 10 kills while Sua added 21 assists and a pair of kills. Sretenovic added 10 digs and seven kills as Lawrence Tech hit .076 as a team. The Blue Devils finished the match with 28 errors.
The Saints were led by Alex Garavalia with 16 kills and a .343 hitting percentage while Keegan Crawford had 40 assists and 10 digs with six kills. The Saints hit .250 as a team and finished with 50 kills.
