Blue Devils late second half push not enough to overcome Warriors

Southfield: In what looked to be a bounce-back win for this young Blue Devil squad tonight alongside an upset of sorts in the conference fell short tonight with the Warriors able to keep the Blue Devils at bay. The Blue Devils would fall to the Warriors of Rochester University (Mich.) 64-78 on Wednesday evening inside the Don Ridler Field House. The Blue Devils kept it close early on in the first half with it going back and forth taking the lead 17-16 with 9:28 left in the first half. This would be the only lead the Blue Devils would garner on the night as they would struggle to find pace with Warriors overall. In the first half, the Blue Devils shot 45.5% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc. The second half though saw the Blue Devils struggling to find the net from beyond the arc shooting a measly 26.7% from three. Overall the Blue Devils shot 43.2% as a team and 33.3% from three.

As the second half got underway for the Blue Devils it was clear stops on defense was going to be key for them to have any chance of an upset bid against the Warriors. That upset bid almost came to fruition for this young Blue Devil squad cutting the lead within 10 pts with 5:25 left in the second half. That upset bid would come up short with the Warriors being able to hit some key free throws alongside getting defensive stops for them to pull away with the win late.

Overall four Blue Devils scored double digits tonight lead by the transfer Jordan Henry with 22 pts on 5-8 shooting on the night. Freshman Brandon Beavers knocked in 11 pts himself and transfer Dewayn Allen also had 11 pts on the night going 3-5 from beyond the arc. The final Blue Devil in double digits on the night was freshman Gunnar Gustafson with 10 pts going 4-6 from the line. Additional scoring tonight came from junior Alek Ivonavic with 7 pts and Carter Frantz with 3 pts.

The Blue Devils look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon in Adrian, Michigan with a conference clash against the Saints of Siena Heights. Game time is set for a rare 3:00 PM conference game.
