Blue Devils Split on Final Day of the Michigan Men's Volleyball Invitational

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's volleyball team split on the second day at the Michigan Men's Volleyball Invitational in Adrian, Mich. The Blue Devils fell to Aquinas (Mich.) College 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23) in the first game of the day and beat Olivet (Mich.) College 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 25-13).

Lawrence Tech vs. Aquinas – 3-0 – 25-20, 25-19, 25-23

The Blue Devils and Saints traded points as the set was tied five times early on, but Aquinas was able to pull away with a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. Calvin Ooms kickstarted a run for Lawrence Tech as the cut the lead to one at 17-16 on a block from Joseph Balandaand Gospel Sua. The Saints took the opening set with on an LTU service error to give Aquinas the set 25-20.

Lawrence Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set but Aquinas battled back to within one at 6-5. The Blue Devils extended their led to 10-7, but the Saints responded with 6-2 run to take a 13-12 lead on a kill from Ruben Lopez. Max Jewett tied the match up at 13-13 and an ace by Ooms gave LTU a 15-14 lead. Aquinas didn't wilt, scoring the next four points to retake the lead at 18-15 on a kill from Frank Mott. That was all the Saints needed as they secured the set win with a 7-4 run to take a 2-0 lead on the Blue Devils.

In the third set, the Blue Devils Sua served LTU into a 14-10 lead and extended the lead to 18-13 before Aquinas set their sights on a comeback. The Saints scored 10 of the next 15 points to tie the set at 23-23. The Saints won the final two points of the set to seal the match win with a 25-23 set win.

Inside the Numbers

Lawrence Patton led the Blue Devils with 12 kills and .207 hitting percentage while Ooms finished the match with eight kills and five digs. Sua recorded a team high 30 assists and two block assists while Stefan Sretenovic led the way defensively with 14 digs.

Aquinas was led by Ruben Lopez with 16 kills and a .326 hitting percentage while Colby Elder recorded 33 assists. Daniel Littleton led the team in block assists with five with Josh Evers have a team high 16 digs.

Lawrence Tech vs. Olivet – 3-1 – 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 25-13

Lawrence Tech earned the first win of the 2019 season with a four set thriller over NCAA Division III Olivet. The Blue Devils opened with a pair of set win to take a 2-0 lead. In the opening set, the Blue Devils hit .323 from the attack and had just three errors.

Lawrence Tech took the early lead in the opening set at 5-1, but Olivet battled back to tie the match at 8-8 after a mini 4-0 run. Narkiewicz hit an ace to give the Blue Devils a 12-10 lead as Lawrence Tech extended their lead to 15-11 following an Ooms attack and an Olivet error. Olivet cut the Lawrence Tech lead to one at 18-17, but a pair of kills by Narkiewicz put the Blue Devils up 21-19. Ooms ad Patton closed the set with a pair of kills to take the set 25-23.

The Blue Devils and Comets went back-and-forth in the second set with teams trading points with 11 ties, the last at 16-16. Lawrence Tech took the lead for good at 17-16 on a bad set from Olivet. The Blue Devils ended the set with a pair of Olivet errors to seal the LTU win, 25-22.

The Comets earned the win in set three, taking it 25-18, but the Blue Devils responded with a strong fourth set to seal the win. Lawrence Tech jumped out to a 12-5 lead and never looked back as they hit 36.8 percent from the attack. Narkiewicz sealed the win with a kill on the final point to give LTU a 25-13 set win.

Inside the Numbers

Patton led the way again for Lawrence Tech, this time with 10 kills and a .233 hitting percentage with 10 digs. Narkiewicz hit 11 kills while Sua recorded a team high 33 assists. Balanda added two solo blocks and three kills.

Olivet was led by Trent Robinson with 17 kills and .306 hitting percentage while Dan Hayes added 10 kills and finished with a .217 hitting percentage. Aaron Giorgi recorded a game high 36 assists and nine digs.
